Multibyte Mail for WordPress

Written in the mid-afternoon in English • Tags: ,

The Multibyte Mail plugin replaces the wp_mail() function with one that tries to encode the usual email message headers that might contain 8-bit data. It should work well with the core WordPress code as well as any plugins, unless the plugin is sending out some unusual headers.

If you receive bounces for comments on articles with 8-bit (or multibyte) characters in their title (or in the name of the comment author), this plugin should prove helpful. (more…)

I’ve had a number of ideas on articles for this blog, but a) I didn’t write them down and b) the ideas didn’t choose to occur at times when I’d be idling by a keyboard… I’ve started a new section in my task management software to try and keep such ideas alive for the future.

Vonage horror stories

Written at evening time in English • Tags:

I could have saved some time if I had read more user comments from the Google results for unlocking my Vonage-provided Cisco ATA-186 adapter. It appears Vonage doesn’t want to unlock your adapter even after you have stayed with them for ages, or even if you pay them for the unlocking service.

I found this quite surprising, as I’ve been a satisfied Vonage customer for many years. I only discontinued the service several months after moving to Finland, when it was clear I was not using it enough to justify the cost.

Based on my experience today, though, it seems the horror stories are quite true. (more…)

IPv6 is here

Written in the mid-morning in English • Tags: , ,

I’ve had IPv6 connectivity for over 5 years (first from IIJ, now from SixXS). However, it wasn’t until last night that I finally got my website on IPv6, when some final wrinkles in the web server configuration were ironed out. (more…)

I implemented my dream about Swish-e-based search some time ago, but today I finally figured out how to make the results page look like the rest of the site. (more…)

… if only I had packed the cable for the camera. I took some photos to show the general landscape of the area in Finland where I grew up, and I thought I’d post them (and some other new photos) but that has to wait until I return home.

Switching to Gregarius

Written in the mid-afternoon in English • Tags: ,

I’ve switched to reading feeds with Gregarius because I grew tired of tweaking my old reader, unfortunately code that apparently is no longer developed. Gregarius has more bells and whistles than I’ve had time to look into, and I had to change my reading habits a bit, but not too drastically. Installation was a breeze and I could move all my feeds with a couple of clicks using an OPML file. Gregarius is also themable and pluggable, which is always a guarantee for hours of fun adjusting the behaviour to your liking. (more…)

Winter skies

Written at evening time in English • Tags: , , ,

The days are getting longer in leaps again. It can be unbelievably bright with the reflecting snow doubling up the sunshine. I just had to jump out for a quick walk with the camera when I saw the frosty trees through the window.

It wasn’t quite as sunny in Nuuksio on this Friday, but that didn’t stop us from having a nice walk in the woods and across the ponds. Some of the pictures turned out quite fine.

Thankfully it is too late now for this spring, but I might actually consider getting skis for next winter. Unless I get my head checked and snap out of it… I definitely mean just cross-country skiing, I’m not completely out of my mind yet. :-)

In addition to the new pictures, there’s also an RSS feed for the photo album. I don’t always write in the blog when I add pictures, but the feed will automatically pick them up.
